âCannon, is this really necessary?â I called over my shoulder. I stood in front of a large mirror, and staring back at me was someone I didnât know. Okay, when Gen had dolled me all up I looked, well, provocative. Not that thereâs anything wrong with that; itâs just not me. Still, I at least looked my age. This though ⦠I turned, keeping my eyes glued to the strange person ⦠was insane.
I wore a dress the same deep blue as the outer ring of my eyes. It was long-sleeved and pooled around my feet. The material felt like a second skin hugging every inch of my body, including my throat. There was a deep V on the back of the dress that dipped so near my rump I was afraid to bend over for fear of a wardrobe malfunction. The damn dress looked like it was painted on. It was sexy without showing hardly any skin, well aside from my back. My hair was piled atop my head in a crazy explosion of blonde curls. Had I done it, it would have looked like Iâd just been caught in a category five hurricane, but the hairstylist made it look elegant.
I was twenty-five, though I always looked about eighteen. That moment, in that dress, I looked like a grown-ass woman. As amazing as I knew I looked, I felt like a fish out of water. Hell, I was even making that mouth open, gasping-for-air look.
âAddison, you look beautiful. Is what necessary?â he crooned as I felt him run a cold finger down my spine. I had to stifle a shiver.
âAll of this? I feel like weâre going to the opera.â I gestured to my reflection.
âYes, it is. Now, do you remember the rules of the night?â he questioned for the hundredth time.
I let out an exasperated sigh and rolled my eyes as I replied, âYes, Cannon. Youâve only made me say them fifty times.â
He raised his brows expectantly.
Groaning, I uttered the rules, âI will only speak when spoken to.â Okay, I would give it the old college try. Really, I would. âI cannot look at Merriam for longer than five seconds. Because she might entrance me and then tell me to go jump off a cliff, then I would have to.â Okay, that last one, I would not have an issue with. âI should not show my throat to anyone under any circumstances.â
âAndâ¦â He knew I had full knowledge of what his last rule was. He continued to run his damn finger slowly up and down my back. I was having a hard time thinking.
âAnd ⦠I will not talk back to, question, or undermine anyone, especially you or Merriam.â I took a step forward and then ducked past Cannon.
âYouâre not going to have a problem doing that last one, will you?â he asked, eyeing me.
âWho me? Never.â My tone being very clear that I just could not believe he would think otherwise. In the end I was totally lying and knew I would have every issue complying to my last Cannon-imposed rule.
